Fencing and garden work in Wells
Wells is at the eastern edge of our full service area, along the foot of the Mendips from our base near Axbridge, and we offer every service there. What should I know before changing a boundary in Wells?
Much of central Wells is a conservation area with a high number of listed buildings. If your home is listed, the usual permitted development rules for fences don't apply in its grounds, so speak to Somerset Council before replacing a wall or fence. Elsewhere, a fence up to 2 metres normally needs no permission.
Old walls are common in the centre and they are often part of what makes a garden listed or sensitive. We can quote a new fence or a hedge cut while you check, and we will not start on a boundary you have doubts about.
What are gardens like around Wells?
In the old city they are mostly walled, sheltered and smaller, with established hedges and borders. Out towards the edges of Wells, newer houses have open, plainer plots. South of the city the land drops to the moors and gets wetter, while the north side climbs onto the Mendip slopes.
The city takes its name from the springs that rise by the Bishop's Palace, and the ground around it changes quickly from limestone slope to wetter moor. That makes a site visit worth having for any fence or deck, and photos enough for most hedge, lawn and tidy-up jobs.

Do you work right in the centre of Wells?
Yes. The whole city is in our full area. Some central streets are narrow, so tell us about parking and access when you get in touch.
My house is listed. Can you still put up a fence?
We can, once you have checked with Somerset Council. The normal permitted development rules for fences don't apply within the grounds of a listed building, so the council needs to say yes first.
Is Wells too far for regular garden visits?
No. Wells is at the edge of our full area, but it is inside it, so regular mowing and garden maintenance are on offer there just as they are nearer home.
