Gates

What gates do you fit?

Two kinds of gate: garden gates in a closeboard or post and rail fence, and field gates, 12 ft field gates included, for paddocks, yards and farm entrances. A gate is only as good as the posts it hangs on, so we set those first and hang the gate to swing and latch cleanly.

  • Garden gates

A gate in a new or existing fence line, so the path, drive or back garden is closed off but easy to get through.

  • 12 ft field gates

Wide field gates for paddocks and farm entrances, big enough for a vehicle or a trailer to get through.

  • Gates in a new fence run

The neatest way: the gate goes in with the fence, posts and all. See fencing.

Rooksbridge: 45 m of post and rail and a 12 ft gate.

Your quote

What affects the cost of a gate?

We don't publish prices, because every gate and every gateway is different. These are the things that change a gate quote. The quote is free, emailed to you or given on the day, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

  • Width

A garden gate is a small job next to a 12 ft field gate.

  • The posts

Whether new posts go in, and how much they have to carry.

  • The ground

Soft or wet ground at a field entrance needs more care than a dry garden path.

  • Fittings

Hinges, latches and a stop to suit how the gate is used.

  • With a fence or on its own

A gate in a new fence run shares the work with the fence.

Questions

Gates questions

The questions people ask us most about gates. If yours is not here, ring or WhatsApp and ask.

What gates do you fit?

Garden gates for paths and side entrances, and field gates for paddocks and farm entrances, like the 12 ft gate we hung at Rooksbridge. Tell us the width of the gap and what needs to get through it, and we will say what suits.

Can you fit a gate as part of a new fence?

Yes, and it is usually the best way to do it, because the gate posts go in with the rest of the run. At Rooksbridge we put up 45 metres of post and rail and finished it with a 12 ft field gate.

Can you quote for a gate from a photo?

A photo of the gateway helps, so send one on WhatsApp. Because the posts and the ground matter so much, we usually come and look before we give a firm quote. The quote is free either way.

Which areas do you fit gates in?

Garden work and gates are within about 10 to 15 miles of Axbridge, including Cheddar, Wedmore, Mark, Rooksbridge and Winscombe. If a gate is part of a fencing job further across Somerset, ask us when you ring.
