Fencing
What fencing do you put up?
Three kinds of fence installation, chosen for the job: closeboard for privacy round a garden, post and rail where you want an open boundary, and half-round rail with stock wire where animals need keeping in. We hang gates in them too. Homes, farms, smallholdings and holiday lets across Somerset.
Closeboard and privacy fencing
Featheredge boards on rails between solid posts, for a garden you can't see into. Good along drives, side paths and back boundaries.
Post and rail
The open countryside boundary for fields, drives and larger gardens. Rails between posts, nothing to block the view.
Half-round rail with stock wire
Post and half-round rail with stock wire run along the length, for paddocks and smallholdings. Strong, practical and tidy, with a traditional look.
Gates to go with it
Garden gates and 12 ft field gates, hung in the new run. See gates.

A real job
What does 50 metres of post and rail look like?
This is our job at Mark: 50 metres of post and half-round rail with stock wire along a paddock, posts in, rails on and the wire run the full length. The clip is our own photos of the job, one after another.
A closeboard fence, start to finish
A garden job of ours: new posts along a gravel drive, rails fixed, then the boards and gravel board on. Our own photos from the day.

Before and after
An old fence out, a new one in
The same line before and after: a tired fence that had started to fall apart, replaced with new closeboard on the same line. Drag the handle across the photo to compare before and after. Both photos are from the job.

Your quote
What affects the cost of a new fence?
We don't publish prices because no two fence lines are the same. These are the things that change a fencing quote, and the ones we look at when we come out. The quote itself is free, emailed to you or given on the day, with no obligation.
Length of the run
How many metres, and whether it runs straight or turns corners.
Type and height
A tall closeboard privacy fence is a different job from three rails of post and rail.
The ground
Wet clay on the Levels, stony ground on the Mendip side, old footings or tree roots in the way.
Access
Whether posts and boards can get to the line easily or have to go round the house.
What comes out first
An old fence, overgrowth along the line, or an old hedge that has to be cut back.
Gates
How many, how wide, and the hinges and latches to suit.

Questions
Fencing questions
The questions people ask us most about fencing. If yours is not here, ring or WhatsApp and ask.
How high can a garden fence be without planning permission?
As a general rule in England, a fence up to 2 metres high doesn't need planning permission, or up to 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some newer estates have their own limits, so check with Somerset Council or North Somerset Council if any of those apply to you. Our guide to fence height and boundary rules covers neighbours and who owns the fence.
Which fence is best for a paddock or field edge?
For horses, sheep or a smallholding, post and half-round rail with stock wire is the usual choice: the rails give a strong, visible line and the wire keeps animals in. That is what we put up along 50 metres of paddock at Mark. For a garden you want private, closeboard is the better fence. More in our post and rail fencing guide.
Do you put up fencing for farms and businesses?
Yes. We fence for farms, smallholdings, holiday lets and other businesses as well as homes, from stock fencing to field gates. There is more on our farms and businesses page.
How far do you travel for fencing?
We do every service within about 10 to 15 miles of Axbridge. Fencing we also take on further across Somerset, Taunton and Bridgwater included. We don't cover Yeovil, Bath and North East Somerset or anywhere outside Somerset.
Can you quote for fencing from photos?
Photos help us understand the job, so send some if you have them, but for fencing we always come and look before we quote. We need to see the ground, check access and measure the line properly. The visit and the quote are both free.
What happens to the old fence?
We leave the site tidy when we finish. What happens to the old panels, posts and offcuts is something we agree with you when we quote, so there are no surprises on the day.
