Raised timber decking in Somerset

We build raised timber decks, framed, levelled and boarded, with steps and rails where the ground calls for them, around Axbridge and further across Somerset, Taunton included. Our raised deck at Rooksbridge went from bare lawn to rails on. We are a family business, running since 2006, and every decking quote starts with a free visit.

Decking

What goes into a raised deck?

A raised deck is a small build: posts set in the ground, a frame levelled on top, joists across it, then the boards, with steps and rails where the height needs them. We do each stage ourselves, so the same family that sets the posts lays the last board.

  • Posts and frame

Posts set where the deck needs carrying, and a timber frame levelled across them, even on a sloping lawn.

  • Joists and boards

Joists across the frame, then the deck boards laid and fixed down.

  • Steps and rails

Steps down to the garden and rails round the edge, to suit the height of the deck.

Why the frame matters

Most of the work in a raised deck is out of sight once it is finished: the posts, the frame and the joists. Getting them level and solid is what stops boards bowing and steps rocking later. The boards are the easy part.

Your quote

What affects the cost of a deck?

We don't publish prices, because every deck is built to the space and the ground. These are the things that change a decking quote, and what we look at when we come out. The quote is free, emailed to you or given on the day, with no obligation.

  • Size

How many square metres of deck, and its shape.

  • Height

A low deck by the door, or a raised one that needs steps and rails.

  • The ground

A level lawn, a slope, or wet ground that needs more posts.

  • Steps and rails

How many steps down, and how much rail round the edge.

  • Access

Whether timber can get to the back garden easily.

How it works

  3. A free quote

  4. The work, left tidy

The same family turns up to do the job, and we leave the site tidy when we finish.

Questions

Decking questions

The questions people ask us most about decking. If yours is not here, ring or WhatsApp and ask.

Do I need planning permission for raised decking?

Under the permitted development rules in England, decking more than 30 centimetres above the ground needs planning permission, as does decking that, with other extensions and outbuildings, would cover more than half the garden. Listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. Check with Somerset Council or the Planning Portal before a raised deck goes ahead. Our decking and planning permission guide explains the 30 cm rule.

Can you build a deck on a sloping garden?

Yes. A raised deck is often the answer to a slope, because the posts can be set to different heights and the frame levelled on top. We look at the slope and the ground when we come out to quote.

Can you quote for decking from photos?

Send photos if you have them, but for decking we always come and look before we quote, so we can check the ground, the levels and the access. The visit and the quote are free.

How far do you travel for decking?

Decking, like fencing, we take on across Somerset, Taunton and Bridgwater included, as well as within about 10 to 15 miles of Axbridge. We don't cover Yeovil, Bath and North East Somerset or anywhere outside Somerset.

How do I stop decking going slippery in winter?

Keep it swept, especially of wet leaves, and give it a scrub when green algae starts to show. Our winter decking guide goes through it step by step.
