Fencing and garden work in Mark

In Mark we put up 50 metres of post and half-round rail with stock wire along a paddock, and we have cut hedges in the village too. Mark is out on the Somerset Levels, in our full service area, so we offer every service there, from fencing and gates to mowing, maintenance and hedge cutting.

What did we build in Mark?

A 50 metre run of post and half-round rail fencing with stock wire, round a paddock beside a cottage. Half-round rails give the traditional countryside look, and the stock wire behind them keeps animals in. It went up in October 2026 and the photos here are from the job.

The paddock was cleared first, then the posts went in along the line and the rails and wire followed. It is the kind of fence that suits Mark well: open enough to let the wind through across the flat ground, and stock-proof without looking heavy.

See the post and rail job at Mark for more photos.

And the hedges?

We have also cut hedges in Mark. On the Levels, hedges grow hard through the wet months and lanes are narrow, so an overgrown hedge quickly becomes a problem for the road as well as the garden.

What is it like fencing on the Levels around Mark?

Mark is low-lying, on clay, and drained by a network of rhynes, including the Mark Yeo that runs north to the Axe. Ground like that stays wet through winter, so post positions and the type of fence need more thought than on firm ground. We look at the ground before we quote.

Mark is also a long village, strung out along the Causeway towards the coast, with houses backing straight onto fields. That gives a lot of long boundaries where a garden meets grazing, which is exactly where post and rail with stock wire earns its keep.

One thing to check first: if your boundary runs beside a rhyne, the Axe Brue drainage board controls work within 9 metres of its watercourses, and a fence that close may need their consent. It costs nothing to ask them before the line is set.

What else do we do in Mark?

Everything else on our list. As well as fencing and hedges, we put up gates and decks in Mark, mow lawns once or on a regular round, and keep gardens maintained. Overgrown patches can be cleared too, and we leave it tidy when we finish.

  • Fencing: Post and half-round rail with stock wire for paddocks, closeboard for gardens along the Causeway
  • Hedge cutting: Roadside and garden hedges cut back, with the verge left clear
  • Gates: Field gates hung in a new fence run
  • Garden maintenance: Strimming, bush and shrub trimming and regular visits for long Levels gardens

Questions

Questions about working in Mark

Short answers to what people in and around Mark ask us. Anything else, ring or WhatsApp 07594 230584 and ask.

What fence did you put up in Mark?

Fifty metres of post and half-round rail with stock wire, round a paddock beside a cottage, in October 2026. The photos on this page are from that job.

Will a fence stay firm in wet clay?

It can, if the posts are set with the ground in mind. Clay on the Levels holds water through winter, so we look at how wet your boundary gets before we decide where the posts go and which fence suits.

My garden backs onto a rhyne. Can I fence along it?

Possibly, but check first. The Axe Brue drainage board controls work within 9 metres of its watercourses, so a fence close to a rhyne may need their consent. We are happy to quote once you know where the line can go.

Do you cut hedges along the lanes in Mark?

Yes, we have cut roadside hedges in Mark. Hedge cutting is one of our core services, and we can often quote it from a photo.
