Hedge cutting
What hedges do you cut?
Garden hedges that have got away from you, long runs along a lane or a field edge, and the bushes and shrubs around them. We cut back, trim the sides and top square, and leave the ground under the hedge tidy. Homes, farms and holiday lets all.
Garden hedges
Privet, laurel, beech and the like, cut back to shape and trimmed square on the sides and top.
Roadside and field-edge hedges
Long runs along a lane, a drive or a field boundary, cut back so they stop crowding the verge.
Bushes and shrubs
The shrubs around the hedge trimmed at the same visit. Regular trimming sits under garden maintenance.

Our photos
The hedges we get called out to
Hedges like these, photographed before we cut them: a tall roadside hedge crowding a drive, a lane verge, and a garden hedge grown out between fence panels. We also cut the hedges on our job at Mark.
Nesting season
When can you cut a hedge in Somerset?
For most hedges, between September and the end of February. Birds nest from March to August, and any wild bird's nest in use is protected by law all year, so we check before we cut. Farm hedgerows in England must not be cut at all from 1 March to 31 August.
- Garden hedges: no fixed ban, but we look for nests in use first and leave a hedge alone if we find one.
- Farm hedgerows: no cutting or trimming from 1 March to 31 August (Rural Payments Agency, gov.uk).
- The RSPB recommends cutting hedges only between 1 September and 28 February.
- Hedges with berries are best left until late winter, once the birds have eaten them.

Your quote
What affects the cost of hedge cutting?
We don't publish prices, because hedges vary so much. These are the things that change a hedge cutting quote. For most hedges we can quote from a few photos, emailed to you or given on the day, free and with no obligation.
Length
A short garden hedge or a long run along a lane.
Height and width
How tall it is, and how we reach the top.
How overgrown
A regular trim, or a hedge that hasn't been touched for years.
Access
Whether we can reach both sides, and what is underneath.
The cuttings
Clippings are part of the job; we agree what happens to them when we quote.

Questions
Hedge cutting questions
The questions people ask us most about hedge cutting. If yours is not here, ring or WhatsApp and ask.
When is the best time to cut a hedge?
For most hedges, between September and the end of February, which is the window the RSPB recommends. Clipped garden hedges suit an autumn cut, and hedges with berries are better left until late winter. Our hedge cutting guide has the detail.
Can you cut a hedge in spring or summer?
A garden hedge can be trimmed if there are no nests in use, so we check thoroughly before we start and leave it alone if we find one. Farm hedgerows are different: in England they must not be cut from 1 March to 31 August.
Can you quote for hedge cutting from photos?
Usually, yes. Send a few photos on WhatsApp or through the form, with a rough idea of the length and height, and we can often price it without a visit. The quote is free, emailed to you or given on the day.
What happens to the hedge cuttings?
We leave the site tidy when we finish. What happens to the cuttings is something we agree with you when we quote, so you know exactly what to expect.
