Fencing, decking and garden care

Fencing and garden work in Wedmore

Wedmore is close to home for us, and we offer every service there: fencing, gates and decking, hedge cutting, lawn mowing, garden maintenance and clearance. The village sits on the Isle of Wedmore, a patch of higher ground above the moors, and our work there runs from village gardens to paddocks and farm hedges.

What is the ground like around Wedmore?

The Isle of Wedmore is a low rise of Blue Lias and marl between the Axe and the Brue, so the village itself drains better than the moors below it. Out on Tealham and Tadham Moors the water table stays high for most of the year, and fence posts there sit in wet ground.

That difference matters. A garden fence in the middle of the village is a fairly ordinary job; a paddock fence on the moor edge needs thought about how wet the ground gets in winter and where the water sits. We look at both when we come out to measure.

Field boundaries round here are mostly hedges and post and rail with stock wire, and that is what we get asked to put up or tidy most often.

When can you cut a farm hedge near Wedmore?

On farmland in England, hedgerows must not be cut between 1 March and 31 August, under rules set by the government. In gardens there is no fixed date, but nesting birds are protected by law all year, so we check a hedge before we cut it in spring and summer.

Most of the hedges we cut around Wedmore are long lane and field boundaries, so autumn and winter are the busy months. Book in early if you want a farm hedge done before the March cut-off. Our hedge-cutting guide sets out the rules in full, with links to the official sources.

What do we do in Wedmore, Blackford and Theale?

The whole list, because Wedmore parish is inside our core area. Around the village we do a lot of regular mowing and garden maintenance. Out on the moors it is more often paddock fencing, field gates and hedges for smallholdings and farms.

  • Hedge cutting: Field and lane hedges in autumn and winter, garden hedges checked for nests first
  • Fencing: Post and rail with stock wire for paddocks on the moor, closeboard for village gardens
  • Gates: Field gates, including 12 ft gates, hung as part of a fence run
  • Lawn mowing: Regular mowing round the village, or a one-off cut to get a lawn back

Questions

Questions about working in Wedmore

Short answers to what people in and around Wedmore ask us. Anything else, ring or WhatsApp 07594 230584 and ask.

Do you cut farm hedges as well as garden hedges?

Yes. We cut field and lane hedges as well as garden ones. On farmland the legal cutting season ends on 1 March, so it is worth booking farm hedges in autumn or early winter.

Can you fence a paddock that floods in winter?

We will look at it first. Ground on the moors around Wedmore holds a lot of water, and how wet it gets decides where the posts go and what kind of fence makes sense. Post and rail with stock wire is the usual answer for stock.

Do you come out to Blackford and Theale?

Yes. The whole of Wedmore parish is in our full area, so every service we offer covers Blackford, Theale and the hamlets around them.
