Fencing, decking and garden care

Fencing and garden work in Axbridge

Axbridge is our home patch. We are a family business based just outside the town, at Mudgley, and we have been working round here since 2006. Every service we offer covers Axbridge: fencing, gates and decking, plus hedge cutting, lawn mowing, garden maintenance and clearing overgrown corners.

What are Axbridge gardens like to work in?

Many Axbridge gardens sit behind old houses around the square and along the High Street, so they are narrow, walled and reached through a passage. Further up, plots climb the lower slopes of the Mendips. Both shape a job: how materials get in, and how a fence line follows the ground.

The town grew as a market and wool town, and the old centre is a conservation area with a lot of listed buildings, King John's Hunting Lodge on the square among them. Behind those frontages, gardens tend to be long and thin, edged with stone walls, and there is rarely a side gate wide enough for a pallet of panels. Tell us about access when you get in touch and we will plan around it when we come to look.

Out on the edges of town the houses are newer and the gardens are more open, but the ground still tilts. A closeboard fence on a slope is usually stepped panel by panel; post and rail can follow the ground instead.

Do I need permission for a new fence in the old town?

Usually not for a normal garden fence up to 2 metres, or 1 metre beside a road. Listed buildings are the exception: the national permitted development rules for fences don't apply within a listed building's grounds, so check with Somerset Council's planning team before replacing a boundary there.

Being in the conservation area does not by itself stop you replacing a fence like for like, but walls and boundaries on older properties can be sensitive. If you are not sure, ask the council first; we are happy to quote either way and wait while you check. The government's Planning Portal has the plain rules on fence heights.

What do we do for homes in Axbridge?

Everything on our list, because Axbridge is on our doorstep. Most calls from the town are for garden work that comes round again: hedges along a lane, a lawn that needs regular mowing, or a back garden that got away from someone. Fencing and decking jobs here we come and measure in person.

  • Hedge cutting: Lane-side hedges and garden boundaries, cut back outside the bird nesting season where we can
  • Lawn mowing: One-off cuts or a regular visit, for small town gardens and bigger plots on the edge of town
  • Garden clearance: Overgrown back gardens behind the old houses, cleared and left tidy
  • Fencing: Closeboard for privacy in town, post and rail where a garden meets a field

Questions

Questions about working in Axbridge

Short answers to what people in and around Axbridge ask us. Anything else, ring or WhatsApp 07594 230584 and ask.

Where exactly are you based?

We are at Mudgley, a short way outside Axbridge, so the town is the closest place we work. That means short trips for regular garden visits and for coming out to measure a fence.

My garden only has access through the house. Can you still do it?

Often, yes. Tell us about the access when you first get in touch, and send a photo if you can. For fencing and decking we come and look before quoting, so we can plan how the materials get in.

Can you look after an Axbridge garden every few weeks?

Yes. Lawn mowing can be one-off or regular, and garden maintenance covers strimming, bush and shrub trimming and keeping borders in hand. Garden jobs like these can often be quoted from photos first.
