Fencing, decking and garden care
Fencing and garden work in Cheddar
We put up fencing, gates and decking in Cheddar and look after gardens there too: hedge cutting, lawn mowing, maintenance and clearing overgrown ground. Cheddar is a few miles along the Mendip edge from where we are based near Axbridge, so the whole village and its outlying lanes sit inside our full service area.

Why does the ground in Cheddar matter for a fence?
Cheddar sits on the southern foot of the Mendips, where limestone is never far down. On the higher side of the village the soil can be thin and stony, and digging a post hole may mean working through rock. On the flatter ground towards the moor it is softer. We check which you have before we quote.
That is one reason fencing and decking always get a site visit from us. A run that looks simple from the road can hit rubble, old walls or bedrock halfway along, and it is far better to know before a price is agreed than to find out on the day.
Slopes are the other thing. Plenty of Cheddar gardens rise steeply from the house. Closeboard panels are stepped down a slope so each one stays level; post and rail can run with the ground for paddocks and larger plots.

Which services do people in Cheddar ask us for?
Every service we offer covers Cheddar. Hedge cutting and clearance come up a lot, because the old cottage gardens and the plots on the slopes grow fast and are hard work to keep on top of. Holiday lets near the gorge often want a regular mow between guests.
- Hedge cutting: Fast-growing cottage hedges and long lane boundaries on the edge of the village
- Garden clearance: Overgrown corners and steep banks cleared back, and the site left tidy
- Lawn mowing: Regular mowing for holiday lets between guests, or a one-off cut
- Fencing: Stepped closeboard for sloping gardens, post and rail for paddocks and smallholdings
What fence works on wet clay or an exposed site in Somerset?
Also useful: Which post and rail fence suits your field, paddock or smallholding?; What affects the cost of hedge trimming?
We cover a 10 to 15 mile radius around Axbridge for every service. Larger business and farm jobs on request. Fencing and decking in and around Somerset, Taunton included.
Do you work on holiday lets in Cheddar?
Yes. We work for homes and businesses, and holiday lets are a good fit for regular visits: lawns mown, edges strimmed and hedges kept in shape so the place looks right when guests arrive. Tell us how often you change over and we will suggest a pattern of visits.
Cheddar draws visitors all year for the gorge and the caves, and a lot of cottages and annexes in the village are let out. If you manage one from a distance, photos are enough for us to quote most garden work, and we can be in touch by WhatsApp so you see what was done.
Where else near Cheddar do we go?
Draycott and Rodney Stoke along the A371, and Shipham above the gorge, are all in our full area. Axbridge is next door on one side, Wells further along on the other, and Wedmore is across the moor to the south.
Also inside our full area near Cheddar: Draycott, Rodney Stoke, Shipham and Nyland.
Questions
Questions about working in Cheddar
Short answers to what people in and around Cheddar ask us. Anything else, ring or WhatsApp 07594 230584 and ask.
Can you put a fence up on a steep Cheddar garden?
Yes. Closeboard is normally stepped so each panel sits level, and post and rail can follow the slope. We come and look first, because the gradient and the rock under the soil both change how the job is done.
We keep hitting rock when we dig. Is that a problem?
It is common on the Mendip side of Cheddar and it is something we plan for rather than a reason to say no. It can affect how long the job takes, which is why fencing and decking quotes always come after a visit.
Can you keep a holiday let garden tidy between bookings?
Yes. We can mow, strim and keep hedges and shrubs in shape on a regular basis. Send a few photos and tell us how often you need us, and we can usually quote without a visit.
Do you clear really overgrown gardens?
Yes, clearing overgrown areas is one of our services, and we leave it tidy when we finish.
